The digital background that I created for the song “Telephone Hour” from the play soundtrack “Bye Bye Birdie” was made using Adobe Illustrator. After learning about vector art and Illustrator in my Advanced Computer Multimedia class, I was asked to create a background for our high school’s play. I was inspired to both make an interesting piece and help my teacher. Out of the song list, Telephone allowed for the most inspiration. As I listened to the song, I noticed that the lyrics jumped around both to and between many different people and the dialogue is cheery and semi-frantic. My first thoughts were phones and a lot of different colors. The phones because the song revolves around phone calls and colors because when I think of quick, hectic dialogue I imagine a lot of bright colors would represent that well. I wanted to create a background that visually captured the mood of the song. The focal point of my piece is the color scheme. The bright colors of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, and pink are meant to catch the audience’s eye and draw them in to then notice the old-fashioned phones. I also decided to neatly line the phones up in five rows of fifteen and then have the colors start from red to pink in vertical rows across the screen. While working on my project, I felt it could be more visually appealing and was slacking an essential component to completely bring the piece together. I was given the recommendation to have the colors on the phones staggered diagonally across the background. Once I made this change, it fully brought my piece together.
