Hairspray is an American musical with music and lyrics by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman and a book by Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan, based on John Waters's 1988 film of the same name. The songs include 1960s-style dance music and "downtown" rhythm and blues.

made this digital design with the initial idea of creating a background for my High School’s 2021 musical theatre showcase, specifically for the song “Good Morning Baltimore” from hairspray. I wanted to incorporate motifs such as the Baltimore row houses, as well as a hairspray bottle. For the silhouette, I used the silhouette of John Travolta in one of the movie’s original posters. I also used my own hand holding a spray bottle, edited to maintain proportion. The white outline subtly defines the form of the silhouette. The light colors in the background help emphasis stay on the focal point of my piece, the black silhouette and text, by providing contrast. And the simplicity of the color palette and composition allow for a pleasant background while also not potentially distracting from the performers on stage, giving the whole piece balance. Doing this piece really helped me learn more about graphic design and explore an artistic style I don’t do normally. It was also fun designing something regarding musical theater, which I enjoy a lot.
