Best Friends

Best Friends “Wake up,” she whispers in his ear, reaching over him to turn on the lamp. He blinks at the sudden light, stretches, rubs the sleep from his eyes. “Should I call?” She nods, and he pulls out his phone, quickly dialing and calling for his ride. They get up, walking into the entry way. He puts on his shoes and sits on the steps, and she sits down next to him. They wait in silence, not touching, each lost in thought. After a while, he takes his phone from his pocket and taps outs a quick text. She doesn’t have to look at the screen to know it’s to his girlfriend. He always texts her after they’ve been together. It’s guilt, she guesses, though he tells her he feels none. They’re friends, he justifies, just best friends. It’s what best friends do. Yet she knows that tomorrow he’ll be at his girlfriend’s locker before she arrives, ready to surprise her with a kiss and a pack of Milk Duds, her favorite. The headlights flash through the window as his step-dad pulls into the driveway; almost 18, he has still opted not to drive, and it’s too late for her to take him home. They both get up from the steps, and she unlocks the door as he shrugs on his jacket. “’Bye,” she whispers in his ear as they hug. He’s several inches taller than she is, and her face buries in his chest. All the better; he can’t see her eyes reddening and growing wet. “Cassie? I’m glad we’re friends,” he tells her, letting go and turning towards the door.
“Me too,” she breathes, but he’s already out the door. Me too, she thinks as the tears start to fall. I’m glad we’re friends. Just friends.

Awesome Story! You seemed shy about it when she brought it up on the board but you should be very proud of it. I think it was an amazing story with such a wonderful back story, and so beautifully worded. I could feel the emotions in the story considering I have been in that position. Again Wonderful job!

Karissa,

I enjoyed this piece and it depressed me. In a good way. We can all relate to this topic of being 'just friends' with someone. You did a good job of expressing a powerful idea in a short amount of words.

The poor girl!!! This is a brilliant piece. It allows the reader to connect with the main character. I love the last line; "I'm glad we're friends. Just friends". It really makes the piece. Great job keeping the reader's attention.

Awww, that's so cute. This was really good. It has just the right amount of details and dialogue. The very end of it keeps the reader wanting more. I know it defiantely has that effect on me. Very good.

I really, really enjoyed this! I could just feel the tension and kind of hoplessness Cassie was feeling! I loved the story line. Although it was silmply, you really got the mood across.

Karissa this story is so amazing! I was really touched by the emotion in your piece. In souch a little amount of words, you conveyed so much. I think you should expand on this and make it a full story. Great job!

AWWWWWWWWW!!!!!! It's really cute AND sad. I am like dying from the fluff. ALL OF THE FLUFF. But anyway, I like the relationship between them in this little story. Maybe you should write more on this little couple and make it a longer story dicussing their relationship and then maybe having them get together in the end, because I really see chemistry between the two. But all in all, this was really good, and I want to see more eventually.
