I never thought too deeply about these lyrics and I did not even know about that plane crash. Such a tragic event but so so so much history is put into every word of this song. Its very iconic.

This made me think of other songs that have meaning and stories behind them. In 1985 the biggest names in music at the time came together and recorded the song "We Are The World" which sold more than 20 million copies raising money for humaritarian aid. Music has so much power

I think it was interesting that the song had so many different meanings and combined the history of music and politics and what was going on durring the time period.

The fact that Don Mclean was able to subtly reference so many things throughout his song lyrics is incredible. At surface level, the lyrics seem to be simple and cryptic, but after listening to the podcast I was shocked to find that it seems to be an ode to times gone by.

I honestly had no idea about what this song was about.  When I heard the context behind this song, I was shocked.  I didn't even know about the plane crash.  It was really interesting to know about what this song was about.

I really like this song because it has a whole different story to it unlike most modern songs. The day the music died was one of the worst days and most people know it because of this song.

I never knew the meaning of this song. It's impressive how many references are packed into American Pie about this history, and it's interessting to know how such a tragic event impacted the song.

The politics and meanings behind the sone amaze me. Also I totally forgot about the plane crash.

I love this song a lot. I never really thought about it so complexly although I did not this was written in response to Buddy Holly's untimely death.

What I've learned from this SOP is essentially that music holds much power. Music has told stories from the beginning of time, and that power will continue for ages to come.

I think it is cool how we learned meanings behind songs that we would not have known otherwise. It shows that even popular songs can have a deeper meaning to them that we can't hear on the surface level of things.

I haven't listened to this song a whole lot, but I remember reading how complex the meaning of the lyrics were.  Its pretty amazing.

I didn't rea;ize this was about something so sad. :( HIts different...

The meaning of the song went completely over my head at first. It really makes you appreciate the storytelling aspect of music and how artists pay tribute to their friends.

I dont particularly like this song but I appriciate the meaning behind it. Songs like this seem to be ever so slightly more important than other songs. Much like the song Ohio by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young.

I find it interesting how lyrics can go deeper than words on a page, and I wonder in the far future if some songs' meanings will be lost to time.

I remember being in awe when I first learned the meaning behind this song. I think learning artists intentions behind their song is what really differentiates musical connection.

It's amazing how no matter how we think music has changed, it still can go back to thousands of years ago!

My dad always talks about this. I can't even fathom the influence that those three had on music.

Clay Sheleheda from: North Allegheny - posted: March 30, 2021
American Pie is a great song, but the meaning behind the lyrics are really sad and depressing.

Amy Hendricks from: North Allegheny - posted: March 30, 2021
This is one of my sisters favorite songs, and has been since middle school, so I've listened to it countless times and yet have never heard the story behind it. This was interesting to learn.

It is beautiful that music can tell so much even in its simplest form. That is one of the reasons that I like music so much.

Julia Maletta from: North Allegheny - posted: March 30, 2021
It's really interesting to see how artists incorrporate history and significant events into songs without people noticing until it is pointed out.

Ethan Chen from: North Allegheny - posted: March 31, 2021
I found it interesting to learn about the impact of Buddy Holly on rock & roll and the reference in "American Pie" to his tragic, early death.

Hyunjun Chang from: North Allegheny - posted: March 31, 2021
I was completely unaware of the plane crash reference within the lyrics. It makes me think about how such great music can mask some beautiful or ever so tragic incidents in life.

Nathan Lam from: North Allegheny - posted: March 31, 2021
I always just thought this was a catchy song, but there is so much meaning behind the lyrics that I didn't know about before

Kai Su from: North Allegheny - posted: March 31, 2021
For how symbolic and sentimental the song is to some people, I have no attachment to the song nor its subject matter, so it was very intersting for me to learn all the different events that influenced the song's creation.
