It was shocking and sad at the same time knowing that artists are taking some other artist's melody and just changing a few patterns and notes and then calling it their own song or piece.  Getting inspiration from another artist isn't wrong at all.  But, it's important to make it something that is their own and make sound different. One example that I can think of right away is the Star Wars Main theme and Holst's Planets(Specifically Mars).  I think copying someone else's melody and claiming it as theirs is just going to far.

It's hard to say it is copying is it not. Especially when your making music and it sounds like something else but it is not intentional. Like with Billie Eilish ilomilo sound like Plants vs Zombies.

i think it is common for songs to sound like each other because certain progressions are popular in pop music. Because these progressions are popular, there are only so many melodies that can be written on top of them.

Copyright is something that is very good to have, but also terrible at the same time. the first thing that comes to my mind is under pressure and ice ice baby when it comes to songs sounding so fimiliar. I agree with Vanilla Ice when he said that a song doesnt get copyrighted unless it does good.

I don't think that its necessarily copying, but taking inspiration from a previous song and changing it up a bit to fit what the artist wants.  There are only a number of chord progressions at genres such as pop can use, so its understandable that some songs may sound the same.

I don't think there is a such thing as copying within music unless its an exact recording of another song. I do think there is a fine line between admiring someones music and following that pattern versus taking a part of it completely.

I think intention has a lot to do with if someone is copying ot not. If they were inspired by someone that's different that stealing their music.

It's concerning to me how far the music industry has taken copyright. Of course there shouldn't be blatant copies of songs, however a fair degree of inspiration or even a similar melody shouldn't be something artists need be wary of. The same thing is occuring with livestreaming and videos, with labels issuing takedown notices for even short clips of their music. In my opinion the labels should welcome the attention to their song instead of tearing down anyone who wishes to imitate or use it.

There is a very very very fine line between copying and getting ideas from another artist. It is sad to think that some artists have stopped, or been hesitant to write music because they do not want to be sued.

I think it's wrong to deliberately steal music from someone, but it is common for two songs to sound the same.

The best pieces of music takes inspiration from great pieces of music that came before, so I wouldn't say that I consider it copying.

Sarah Feick from: North Allegheny - posted: March 30, 2021
I think it is very difficult to come up with a brand new idea that has never been done before. There are so many different ideas out there, but it is possible to make some sort of remix.

I first realized this was a thing listening to Ben Platt's "Bad Habit". The intro sound exactly like the intro to "Drops of Jupiter" by Train. Examples that are as similar as this make it hard to believe it was thought to be an original concept.

I personally do not think that it is copying. I think there is a fine line between "deriving insipiration" and copying and it is important to make sure that you are not doing the latter.

I think an important part of music is borrowing from other artists and improving on previous works. Though I do not believe copying other songs/progressions is the best idea, showing your influence from other artists in music is helpful for a person to discover their personal sound and style.

I think similarities between songs and copyright issues are such messy topics with a lot of grey area.

Clay Sheleheda from: North Allegheny - posted: March 31, 2021
It is very hard to find that fine line of being inspired by something but then copying it as well. I want to write just like the stuff I like to hear, but I don't want to copy it down to the notes.

Hyunjun Chang from: North Allegheny - posted: March 31, 2021
I think there is always a fine line between downright copying and taking inspiration from one and utilizing it in the self's form. Similar to the nature of a remix. It for sure is a very prominent debate behind the ethics of music-making. However, I feel that such can be done without ill-intent or even negative results if they manage to reference it only briefly, maybe not in the same key.

Dylan Shields from: North Allegheny - posted: March 31, 2021
I think its interesting that there is so much different music out now that its almost impossible to create a completely new piece of music. It will always somehow have the same elements that another song has and will never be completely original.

Nick Lev from: North Allegheny - posted: March 31, 2021
With all the music that has been produced up to this day, it would be expected to hear some similarities. If a chord progrssion is shared, it could be a complete coincedence.

Kai Su from: North Allegheny - posted: March 31, 2021
I think that copying music is easier to do then ever because so many genres are so homogenized which makes it hard to draw a line between copying and inspiration.

Nathan Lam from: North Allegheny - posted: March 31, 2021
It is hard to discern whether music is copied or taken inspiration from. If an artist likes a certain kind of music, then they may inadvertently incorporate ideas from songs they've listened to.
